Abstract

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to explore the adaptation experience of new nurses who had received preceptorship.

Method:Nine new nurses who had worked for 3 to 5 months were interviewed and the data were analyzed using content analysis.

Result:The new nurses, from their general experience of preceptorship, discussed teaching characteristics, educational methods. They described the experience related to job as their "being unskilled for the job", as "needing self study to gain knowledge for nursing practice", and "being corrected after having made a mistake". In interpersonal relationships, they felt the preceptor also served as a role model. They responded they had no idea about working conditions related to the hospital organization or administration. As they continued to work with the preceptor they experienced reality shock.

Conclusion:The findings suggest that while preceptorship was evaluated positively by the new nurses, they felt that in addition to the preceptorship program there is a need to develop other strategies to help newly employed nurses adapt to their new positions as employed nurses.
